Age: 53 | Place of Birth: Mandeville, Manchester, Jamaica
Place of Passing: University Hospital of the West Indies

A Life of Grace, Knowledge, and Kindness

Julie-Ann Marie Amoril Biggs — affectionately known as “Marie” — was born on October 13, 1971, in Mandeville, Manchester, Jamaica, to Valda and Joseph Biggs (Snr.). She was the first of four siblings, growing up in California, Lincoln, Manchester, alongside Joseph Junior, Duanne, and later Alister, in a household filled with love, discipline, and laughter.

From an early age, Marie was spirited, caring, and intelligent. She was fiercely protective, especially of her younger brother, Joseph Junior, who remembers her as his first best friend and protector — a role she took seriously, even insisting that he attend Mount Saint Joseph Prep at the tender age of two years, simply because he didn’t want to leave her side.

Marie’s childhood was joyful and vibrant. She played happily with her neighbours, enjoyed nature and fresh fruits, and was known for her strong dislike of anything made with cornmeal — on the other hand, where her brothers would enjoy her share of cornmeal porridge or pudding. Family was central to her identity, a value that shaped the path she chose in life.

A Passion for Learning and Teaching

Marie’s academic journey began at Mount Saint Joseph Prep, where her brilliance quickly became evident. She earned a place at Bishop Gibson High School after passing the Common Entrance Exam, excelling in Mathematics and the Sciences. Her love for learning led her to the University of the West Indies, Mona, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences, majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry.

Never one to rest on her accomplishments, Marie pursued postgraduate studies in the United States and later completed a degree in Education (Mathematics) at Church Teachers’ College, determined to refine her craft as an educator.

A Career Rooted in Service and Excellence

After her studies, Marie returned home to Mandeville, a conscious decision to remain close to her beloved family, especially during a time when her father worked abroad to provide for them. She began teaching at Manchester High School, where she became known not only as a talented Mathematics and Science teacher but as a mentor, guide, and advocate for her students.

Marie actively contributed to the Maths and Science Clubs, and her commitment to the Girl Guides was a continuation of a passion that began during her own school days. Through these programs, she empowered countless young people, instilling in them values of discipline, curiosity, and service.

A Heart Devoted to Faith, Family, and Others

Though she never married or had children of her own, Marie poured her love into her family, students, and community. Her bond with her mother was extraordinary — she was her mother’s constant companion, often travelling with her and caring for her with unwavering devotion. When her mother faced a serious accident, Marie slept at the hospital by her side, just as her mother remained faithfully at her bedside when Marie faced her health battles.

She was a devout Christian Catholic, living her faith with quiet strength and humility. Marie believed in the power of gratitude, forgiveness, and helping others — values that she demonstrated daily in her words and actions. She often offered support to youth and adults searching for spiritual connection and purpose.

A Life of Quiet Wonder and Global Curiosity

Marie had a love for travel, and her passport told the story: Australia, Spain, Barbados, Trinidad — she sought out experiences that expanded her mind and heart. She also found peace in her garden, tending lovingly to flowers as a form of meditation and joy. A lifelong vegetarian, Marie embraced a lifestyle of gentleness and mindfulness.

Legacy of Light and Love

To those who knew her, Marie will be remembered as a kindhearted soul, a woman who believed that education was the gateway to a better future, especially for the youth. She taught more than academics — she taught life. She modelled what it meant to be gracious, thoughtful, and always in service of others.

She lived her life anchored in the verse she cherished:
“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

Even in her final days, Marie’s words reflected the essence of who she was. In her journal, she wrote:

“Some people are smarter than you. Some people have nicer things than you. Some people make more money than you. IT doesn't matter. You have your thing too. Be the person who is honest. Be the person who is generous. Be the person who is happy for other people. Be the person who does the right thing. Be the nice person.”

And she was.

Final Message

Julie-Ann Marie Amoril Biggs touched the lives of many as a teacher, sister, daughter, friend, and guide. Her legacy is not only in what she taught but in how she lived: with integrity, compassion, and a steadfast belief in the potential of others.

She will be deeply missed, always cherished, and never forgotten.
